Simon Rogers: Our 10 point guide to data journalism and how it's changing Here's an interesting thing: data journalism is becoming part of the establishment. Not in an Oxbridge elite kind of way (although here's some data on that) but in the way it is becoming the industry standard. Two years ago, when we launched the Datablog, all this was new. People still asked if getting stories from data was really journalism and not everyone had seen Adrian Holovaty's riposte. But once you've had MPs expenses and Wikileaks, the startling thing is that no-one asks those questions anymore. Instead, they want to know, "how do we do it?" Meanwhile every day brings newer and more innovative journalists into the field, and with them new skills and techniques. So, not only is data journalism changing in itself, it's changing journalism too. These are some of the threads from my recent talks I thought it would be good to put in one place - especially now we've got an honourable mention in the Knight Batten award for journalistic innovation. This is about how we do it at the Guardian. In 10 brief points. 1. It may be trendy but it's not new
Data journalism has been around as long as there's been data - certainly at least since Florence Nightingale's famous graphics and report into the conditions faced by British soldiers of 1858. The first ever edition of the Guardian's news coverage was dominated by a large (leaked) table listing every school in Manchester, its costs and pupil numbers. The big difference? Data was published in books, very expensive books where graphics are referred to as 'figures'. Now we have spreadsheets and files formatted for computers. Which means we can make the computers ask the questions. 2. Open data means open data journalismBut now statistics have become democratised, no longer the preserve of the few but of everyone who has a spreadsheet package on their laptop, desktop or even their mobile and tablet. Anyone can take on a fearsome set of data now and wrangle it into shape. Of course, they may not be right, but now you can easily find someone to help you. We are not wandering alone any more. Straight Statistics will give you a thousand examples of journalists taking those numbers and running with them in completely the wrong direction, but you don't have to go too far to find decent data journalism taking place. Even if it's not woven into the fabric of many of the oldest newspapers and news organisations, there are plenty of agile independent groups - see ProPublica, Wheredoesmymoneygo? and the Sunlight Foundation - who know what they're doing. Data journalism is all about diverse sources. At the Guardian, being part of the news process means that we're part of the news desk (news organisations are obsessed with internal geography), go to the key news meetings and try to make sure that data is part of editorial debate. 3. Has data journalism become curation?Sometimes. There's now so much data out there in the world that we try to provide the key facts for each story - and finding the right information can be as much of a lengthy journalistic task as finding the right interviewee for an article. We've started providing searches into world government data and international development data. 4. Bigger datasets, smaller things
The datasets are getting massive - 391,000 records for Wikileaks' Iraq release, millions for the Treasury Coins database. The indices of multiple deprivation, which is how the government measures poverty across England, has 32,482 records. Increasingly government data comes in big packages about tiny things. Making that data more accessible and easier to do stuff with has become part of the datajournalism process. 5. Data journalism is 80% perspiration, 10% great idea, 10% outputIt just is. We spend hours making datasets work, reformatting pdfs, mashing datasets together. You can see from this prezi how much we go through before we get the data to you. Mostly, we act as the bridge between the data (and those who are pretty much hopeless at explaining it) and the people out there in the real world who want to understand what that story is really about.
6. Long and short-formTraditionally, some of the worst data journalism involved spending weeks on a single dataset, noodling around and eventually producing something mildly diverting. Some of the best involves weeks of investigative data management before coming up with incredible scoops. But increasingly there's a new short-form of data journalism, which is about swiftly finding the key data, analysing it and guiding readers through it while the story is still in the news. The trick is to produce these news data analyses, using the tech we have, as quickly as we can. And still get it right. 7. Anyone can do it?Especially with the free tools we use such as Google Fusion Tables, Many Eyes, Google Charts or Timetric - and you can see some of the stuff our users have produced and posted on our Flickr group.
8. ? but looks can be everythingGood design still really matters. Something like this guide to the senior civil service (designed by Guardian graphic artist Jenny Ridley), or who knows who in the News of the World phone hacking affair (produced by journalist James Ball and designer Paul Scruton) work because they're designed, not by machine, but by humans who understand the issues involved.
9. You don't have to be a programmerYou can become a top coder if you want. But the bigger task is to think about the data like a journalist, rather than an analyst. What's interesting about these numbers? What's new? What would happen if I mashed it up with something else? Answering those questions is more important than anything else.
This stuff works best when it's a combination of both. This guide to Nato operations in Libya is dynamically fed from a spreadsheet, which updates from the Nato daily action briefing. It looks good because it's been well-designed; it works because it's easy to update every day. 10. It's (still) all about storiesData journalism is not graphics and visualisations. It's about telling the story in the best way possible. Sometimes that will be a visualisation or a map (see the work of David McCandless or Jonathan Stray). But sometimes it's a news story. Sometimes, just publishing the number is enough. If data journalism is about anything, it's the flexibility to search for new ways of storytelling. And more and more reporters are realising that. Suddenly, we have company - and competition. So being a data journalist is no longer unusual. It's just journalism. After all, we've been lusting after this monstrosity guy for nearly eight months now, so is all of this building up to be a major disappointment? We're just as eager to find out as the next person, but here are some new images of the real deal to (hopefully) tie you over a bit longer. We've seen shots of the Motorola XT875 up close and personal before, but this is the first time it's been spotted snuggled up next to another phone. Hanging out next to the Samsung Droid Charge, the Bionic's slightly larger appearance lends credence to reports that it has a 4.5-inch display. A few other cosmetic features that stick out -- quite literally, we might add -- are the tapered back that bulges halfway up the phone to accommodate the camera, and the beveled edge around the perimeter. As already expected, the microUSB / HDMI port on the bottom right side for Webtop access can easily be discerned. Will this be enough to whet your whistle for another few weeks? If not, we hear there's another Verizon device inbound that you might be interested in. How? By rickrolling one of the 2.3 million Twitter users who follow its feed and was complaining that it wasn't very interesting. "Sorry to hear that. Fiscal policy is important, but can be dry sometimes. Here's something more fun," the White House tweeted. And then it provided a link ... to Rick Astley singing Never Gonna Give You Up. David Wiggs, a self-described "energy tech enthusiast and mediocre golfer" whose tweet ? "This WH [White House] correspondence briefing isn't nearly as entertaining as yesterday's" ? sparked the outbreak of fun from Pennsylvania Avenue, liked it: "Hilarious", he tweeted, and "Love it!" "Rickrolling" is a prank that began on the 4chan message board (originally called duckrolling, as the link would lead to a picture of a duck on wheels); the first use to link to the Astley video came under the guise of being a secret trailer for the then-unreleased video game Grand Theft Auto IV. It then spread from 4chan and took off with Twitter in 2008 as huge numbers of people joined the service: the necessity of using shortened links for the 140-character service meant you could obscure their destination ? and so hold out a tantalising treat that instead turned out to be Rick Astley singing. In 2010 it was briefly doused when the video was removed from YouTube ? but the White House found time to dig up another. Meanwhile, the deadline for the debt ceiling inched closer on Wednesday night ? leading to a dramatic intervention. (Updated to clarify history of rickrolling.)

We may not have been impressed then, but CTL's attempting to win us over again, this time with a set of three new LED monitors. Available in small, medium, and large, the 22-inch LP2151, 24-inch LP2361, and 27-inch LP2701 all offer 1920 x 1080 displays, 1000:1 contrast ratios (5000000:1 dynamic), two millisecond response times, and HDMI and VDI inputs. They also sport a helpful anti-glare coating and are apparently a quarter of the thickness of "traditional LCD monitors" -- whatever that means. Not exactly earth-shattering specs, but at $216, $258, and $330, we suppose they're not insanely priced, either. Hit the source links for more info, and check out the full PR after the break. Google's Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, David Drummond, made an appearance on the company's official blog today with a post not-so-subtly-titled "When patents attack Android," which directly addresses what he calls a "hostile, organized campaign against Android by Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and other companies, waged through bogus patents." Drummond then goes on to cite a number of examples of this "organized campaign" from those trying to "strangle" Android, including Apple and Microsoft teaming up to buy Novell and Nortel's old patents "to make sure Google didn't get them," Microsoft seeking $15 licensing fees for each Android device, and lawsuits against the likes of Barnes & Noble, HTC, Motorola, and Samsung. According to Drummond, those efforts amount to a "tax" that makes Android devices more expensive for consumers and manufacturers alike, and that "instead of competing by building new features or devices, they are fighting through litigation." He further goes on to bemoan the "anti-competitive strategy" that's "escalating the cost of patents way beyond what they're really worth," and closes things out by noting that he's encouraged by Justice Department investigations into the aforementioned Novell and Nortel patent issues. Hit the source link to read the full post yourself. Update: And now, shots have been fired from both sides. Brad Smith, Microsoft's General Counsel, has shot off the following tweet: "Google says we bought Novell patents to keep them from Google. Really? We asked them to bid jointly with us. They said no." We're guessing the truth lies somewhere in between, as it always does. Update 2: Hoo boy! The hits just keep comin' out of Redmond. Infinite sadness, that's what. While the outfit (understandably) couldn't showcase the BlackBerry Torch 9850 at its London launch event this morning, the CDMA sibling to the Torch 9860 is making its official debut in the US of A. Destined for US Cellular and Sprint here in the States, the 9850 (shown right) will ship with a 3.7-inch WVGA (800 x 480) touchpanel, BlackBerry 7 OS, a "waterfall" screen design that tickles the edges ever-so-slightly, and not one inkling of a physical keyboard. As with the 9860 -- which is destined for AT&T, Rogers, Telus and Bell -- you'll get a five megapixel "zero-shutter lag" camera, 720p movie mode, inbuilt GPS and a 1.2GHz processor. There's no mention yet of a price or release for the SIM-less duo, but you can bet that we'll keep you posted as we hear more. Update: Sprint's just pushed out a full presser of its own (embedded after the break), which also confirms that the Bold 9930 -- shown above on the left -- will also be making its way onto The Now Network. We're told to expect "fall" availability for both BB 7 OS phones, but specific pricing isn't expected until that already-ambiguous time frame draws nearer. As for the 9930, it's boasting an all-too-familiar design, with a 10.5mm-thick chassis, 2.8-inch capacitive touchpanel, the "widest QWERTY keyboard available on a BlackBerry smartphone" and a trackpad to boot. Moreover, NFC support is thrown in, as is a magnetometer for AR apps. Update 2: A trusted source just informed us that the Torch 9850 will soon go for $199 on contract (and after rebate) at US Cellular, or $549 with no strings attached.
